A timeless timepiece, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual embodies everything the Rolex brand and founder Hans Wilsdorf wanted to achieve with his iconic wristwatches.
Though the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is at the entry price-point of Rolex watches – more affordable than the Daytona, Submariner and GMT – this classic wristwatch is nothing short of a well-made, contemporary Swiss timepiece, that embodies everything the Rolex brand stands for.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual earned its name after Rolex launched the world’s first waterproof and dust-proof wristwatch (the Oyster case) in 1926 and their (Perpetual) self-winding movement in 1931.
The Oyster case is one of Rolex’s patented creations which involves the process of screwing the bezel, case back and winding crown into the middle of the case. It’s rumored that Wilsdorf came up with the name Oyster while struggling to open an actual oyster at a dinner party, a nod to the mollusks hard shell and Rolex’s durable casing.
Rolex proved just how durable the Oyster case was in 1927 when a Rolex Oyster traveled across the English Channel on the wrist of English swimmer Mercedes Gleitze. The trek took over 10 hours to complete and set world records for Gleitze and Rolex, who – despite freezing temperatures – both survived the swim.
Additionally, the term Perpetual refers to Rolex’s self-winding movement which rotates with the movement of the wearer’s wrist to generate power – an innovation that’s become a staple in watchmaking today.
Though the Oyster Perpetual was originally considered a watch for active women, because of its smaller sizing and durability, in 2015 a 39mm version was announced, making the timepiece a unisex accessory.
Unlike other luxury watches, Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual has maintained its look and design for the most part since it was launched in 1931.
Today, every Oyster Perpetual timepiece comes complete with a brushed finish on the case and bracelet, the curved outer casing, slim lugs, and made of stainless steel.
While the watch has moved away from its original leather bracelet, the Oyster Perpetual’s three-piece link has been around since the 1930s and is still a fundamental part of the collection today.
Since its release – now 88 years later – the Rolex Oyster Perpetual remains one of Rolex’s best sellers and most in-demand wristwatches.
