Considered one of the most iconic watches around, the Cartier Tank watch has been on the market for over 100 years!
The gorgeous timepiece was first designed by Louis Cartier in 1917. This was the same year the United States entered World War I.
Louis Cartier found inspiration for the watch from the military tanks that were used by the English troops in the war. Once WWI came to an end in 1919, the watch went on sale.
Unlike other timepieces of the era, the Tank watch is considered to be the very first watch designed with style in mind. It was the Tank watch that first used tracks in the bracelet to complement the face when, typically, the straps were more considered as a means to attach the watch to the wrist, with the focus on the face and dial.
The tank watch is the second wristwatch Cartier developed – the first being the Santos, which is largely considered to be the first watch to be worn on the wrist. While the war delayed the release of the Tank watch, it did give Cartier and his Swiss partners more time to refine the design and the mechanics of the now-iconic timepiece.
Unlike most other designers of the era, Cartier was not a fan of the Art Nouveau style that came to prominence at the start of the 19th Century, which is why the Tank watch is more simplistic in design, with the shape between a rectangle and a square.
An instant classic, and entirely ahead of its time, variations of the Tank were released shortly after its debut – the Tank Cintree in 1921, the Tank Louis Cartier in 1922, the water-resistant Tank Etanche in 1931, the Tank Francaise in 1996, the Tank Americaine in 2009 and the outlandish jeweled Tank Folle in 2012. Since the Tank’s debut, there have been over 30 variations of the innovative design.
Cartier’s Tank watch solidified its place in history with its modern, yet timeless construction, which is why it’s no surprise the Tank watch has landed on the wrists of some of Hollywood’s most elite.
Calvin Klein, Andy Warhol, Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, Clark Gable, Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and Sofia Coppola all have owned and sported variations of the Cartier Tank watch.
No matter what style watch you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with Cartier. The brand is one of the most recognizable luxury watch makers in the world and has produced some of the finest timepieces for consumption.
