Rolex has been a pioneer in watch making since 1905 – so it’s no surprise that the beloved luxury watch brand was the first to create a self-winding, water resistant timepiece, with a date window featured on the dial, called the Rolex Datejust.
The groundbreaking design was created in celebration of Rolex’s 40th anniversary in 1945, with the first model of this line named the Jubilee Datejust. The Jubilee was only available in 18-karat gold, in the brand’s Oyster case with a fluted bezel.
It wasn’t until 1954 that Rolex updated the Datejust design, when they released their Cyclops lens on the Rolex Datejust which magnified the date window by 2x. Today, this feature is standard on all Rolex watches with a date.
Just a few years later – in 1957 – the Rolex Datejust was updated with a Caliber 1065 movement, which created a more modernized look and feel for the popular wristwatch. It was also in the 1950s that Rolex released a ladies’ version, the Lady Datejust, which was nearly the same as the men’s version but slightly smaller in size.
During the 1960s-1970s, Rolex continued to update the Rolex Datejust with technical changes, adding a Caliber 1570 and eventually a Caliber 3135. These technical updates gave the Rolex Datejust a slimmer and sleeker look.
The Datejust remains one of Rolex’s top designs and in-demand watches. While the shape has slightly changed, the case taking on a more masculine appearance, the dial layout, hands, cyclops and specs have remained virtually the same.
The Rolex brand was founded in 1902 by Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis. In 1908, Wilsdorf trademarked the “Rolex” name.
The company has had many “firsts” in watchmaking. Rolex created the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, they invented the first waterproof wristwatch, they were the first brand to incorporate an automatic date on the watch dial, the first to display two different time zones and their Daydate watch was the first timepiece to include both the day and the date on the dial.
While the brand was founded in London, they moved their home base to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919 where they are still located to this day.
Thanks to their technical advancements, innovative designs and quality mechanics, Rolex is considered one of the most reputable watchmakers in the world and have created some of the most iconic and beloved timepieces around.
